Freezer Apple Pie Filling with Tasty Treats Link Up

Fall has arrived in Maine, and with it comes the beloved apple pie season. Being the country girl that I am, Apple Pie is my FAVORITE dessert! Our family tradition each fall is to go to the apple orchard and pick lots of apples. The kiddos and hubby eat plenty along the way, while I bag them knowing that I will enjoy throughout the coming year.

I have a recipe tip to share with you for Tasty Treats Tuesday! After we visit the apple orchard, I come home and make an apple pie immediately; then I get busy prepping apple pie filling for the NEXT YEAR. Yes, the next year. I peel, core and slice all the apples we’ve picked, season them, put them in Ziploc freezer bags, and off they go into my freezer. They will keep beautifully until the following fall, and the cinnamon, sugar and nutmeg seep into the apples which creates a much yummier apple pie!

While we haven’t visited the apple orchard yet this year, I went ahead and purchased some apples to show you how you can get started using your apples and freezer apple pie filling!

Toss apples in the dry ingredients by hand, this will ensure the apples do not get chopped up if a spoon were to be used.

Put apple pie filling into a gallon Ziploc freezer bag, and toss into your freezer.

When you’re ready to bake an apple pie simply pull the bag out of the freezer, defrost, put into a pie crust and bake as directed.

*Also, typically I use my Pampered Chef Apple Peeler, Corer, Slicer for my apple pie filling, but a friend was borrowing it when I wrote this post. Β If you have one I highly recommend using it and you’ll be able to combine steps 1-3.Β For this project I used the Pampered Chef Peeler and Apple Corer.
