We love because he first loved us.āĀ Ā ~ 1 John 4:19
My husband and I are on opposite ends of the spectrum. Sometimes I wonder how on earth we got together!
He likes hunting ā too gory for me!
He likes vegging in front of the television ā I feel like a slug.
He likes exercise ā Iām not so motivated.
I am constantly on the move ā he needs to rest.
Iād rather be cold than hot ā he hates to be cold.
I canāt go to bed with a sink full of dishes ā he doesnāt even notice.
His love language is touch ā mine is time. They both start with ātā¦ā
If I were to be brutally honest, Iād tell you heās not the man I dreamed of. He doesnāt leave me daily love notes or buy me weekly flowers. He doesnāt surprise me with romantic get-aways or meaningful gifts. But thatās okayā¦because it isnāt those things that show me his love. In fact, Iād probably think something was wrong if he suddenly proposed a trip for two or showered me with some lavish gift.
To be fair, I am probably not the woman Mike dreamed of either. The one who loves to cook up a storm. The one who always has a polished look in the midst of a sparkling clean home, whiter-than-white laundry, and windows you can actually see through without thinking there is fog outside. He probably wonders what I have done or want/need when he comes home to a piping hot dinner and a wife who did her hair!
I suppose that few people marry the perfect person of their dreamsā¦and I got to thinking about that. If I married the person of my dreams, Iād probably be really unhappy, because āhappily married, 2.5 kids, and white picket fenceā is superficial.
I donāt want superficial love.
Instead, I got a man who loves me just as much on good hair days as on bad onesā¦and believe me, I have more bad than good! He loves me whether there is dinner on the table when he gets home or when he has to call for pizza. He loves me when he has to step over a minefield of toys to say hello to his frazzled wife or when the scent of candles fills the air with calmness.
Thatās love.
So even though our days arenāt always pretty and the roads we travel are sometimes roughā¦Iām talking twists and turns at unexpected moments, rock cliffs, and steep inclinesā¦we can live knowing we have a solid foundation of love. Genuine love. Sacrificial for each other. For betterā¦and for worse.

I had no desire to get married and did not think I would because I didn’t want to have children. Well, God changed that. He gifted me with a wonderful son and the father to match. I cherish my husband because he puts up with me, my family and all those emotional struggles that I deal with regularly. I cherish that we made it through six years without so much of an argument, even though we have had immense struggles. I cherish that he allowed me to be a stay at home because that’s what I wanted. There is very little to complain about or not cherish about my marriage.

What a wonderfully refreshing piece to read! Thank you for being real and honest. My husband and I are night and day, but how I love his differences. I haven’t always, but God showed me what a wonderful man He gave me. God is so cool, isn’t He!? š

Hey Deanna and Misty! Love this post! I have to say I did marry the man of my dreams the first time…and they ended up being superficial dreams. But, the second time God changed my dreams and my husband is everything I dreamed about. He is black and white opposite of what I picked the first time. I am so thankful God opened my eyes to what was really important! š

Isn’t it wonderful what God can do when we yield to Him? Even after we’ve gone and messed up? Love ya sis!

Thanks Mindy! God did some pretty amazing things in my own marriage as well. My hubby and I married, divorced {long story}, and then remarried. We often joke about how we didn’t get it right the first time…

I enjoy reading this post. It is a reminder to me what true love really is. Without true love in our marriage, we would not be working in our 28th year of marriage with 5 children including 3 with special needs. Blessings, Diane Roark http://www.recipesforourdailybread.com
