This theme is so timely! At the beginning of this month, I moved cross country from California to Florida. Even when your house seems organized, packing can bring up all of the messiness and disorganization in your life. Junk drawers, miscellaneous boxes and unmoved furniture all comes to light when you’re trying to downsize.
We decided that we were going to eliminate most of our material things. More than half of our house went up for sale or given away. My heart was lifted by not toting these items across country.
Initially, it was difficult to go through the items. My cousin helped me purge things. You know, sometimes it’s easier for someone else to go through your stuff than you. I would pick out the few things I needed, really truly needed, and tell her to use discretion on the rest.
True, she could have put things that I wanted in the “go” pile, but it didn’t matter. If I hadn’t pulled it out, it wasn’t important enough to keep.
What about the new place? I want it organized! The beauty of moving into your new home is getting to decorate and now without furniture, it’s a must!
Since we are watching our budget, this will be a slow process. The benefit of that is that I won’t be making any rash decisions. Each purchase will be thought out and planned, and truly desired and not regretted. For the kids’ playroom, I’m getting this:

Except I no longer subscribe to it. Why? Because I ended up creating a place for everything! I managed to end up creating a place for things I had no business keeping. Every move, which is a lot of them, I’ve gone through a purge stage.

What are the tricks that you use to keep your house organized?
I always like the unpacking after a move – the fresh re-ordering after the “purge.” Hope you are setting in and home is growing:) My grandmother was a great savor, though – of certain things that blessed us in the long run:) I always worry I’ll throw something away that will be needed in the future:)

This is so true. We have an embarrassment of riches in this country. I am learning to edit. To pass things on to someone who might use it. Great reminder.
