Unit Studies are becoming increasingly popular in the homeschooling community.
The ability to choose a particular topic or subject to study and having many (if not all) subjects covered within the unit, make it a very nice option!
We will be using many unit studies this upcoming school year. I have created some of my own, and have purchased some as well.
After testing my children to determine their learning styles, I learned that they are mostly taught by sight and by hands on activities. This knowledge combined with multiple grades being taught made the decision to use this type of schooling this year. I am very excited to get started!
Our first unit study will begin next week. I purchased a study from In the Hands of a Child on the US Olympics. I wanted to be sure to cover this event, because it will be another 4 years before the Summer Olympics return. This study will be loads of fun I just know it!
Other topics we will cover using a Unit Study/Unit Method are ~ The Solar System, Human Anatomy, as well as the States of Maine and Texas.
My hope and prayer is that removing some textbooks will lessen some stress and rigidity, providing hands on, sitting on the floor learning time!
Oh! We got rid of our desks too! The dining room table and the floor will be our new learning locations!
What changes are you making to your homeschooling this upcoming year?

Before I became a SAHM, I was an elementary school teacher, and I’ve always loved unit studies! Thanks for sharing some of your resources and ideas 🙂 And thanks for linking up at Tiny Tip Tuesday! I’m pinning this 🙂

I love the idea of Unit Studies! It definitely seems like a great approach especially for families with a few children of different ages!

Yes that is one reason families with multiple children use them! That is what drew me to them this year! 🙂 Blessings!

I love the idea of using Unit Studies and the Olympics will definitely be a fun one!! I had no idea you could just buy a study all put together though! Does it come with varying grades?

That sounds like a fun school year! I always go back and forth about wanting desks, but we haven’t had any for 15 years simply because we have no room. I DID like it, though, when we had a school room separate from the rest of the living areas. It was nice not to have to have maps and charts all over the living room! ;-D
I haven’t sorted out our school year yet. That happens next week when all the children are gone to VBS and I get 5 mornings COMPLETELY ALONE (my once a year opportunity).
Thanks for linking this up this week!

I don’t have a separate schooling area, so the desks were just added “clutter”. Coupled with their learning styles I decided it was time to put them away for now and try the more “hands on” approach. 5 mornings alone? WOW! That’s awesome! For now I am using late nights to get the last of things organized 😉 Thanks for stoppin by! Blessings!
