Today I am taking part in Blog Action Day 2013 with Samaritan’s Purse raising awareness and discussion in regards to the issues in Sudan and South Sudan.
Samaritan’s Purse has been working on the ground in Sudan since 1993 and their work still continues on today.
The Sudanese have had to flee their homes due to their government bombing their homes, destroying their fields, homes and lives. After fleeing the people often live on leaves, twigs and bugs struggling to survive prior to reaching the Samaritan’s Purse refugee camps. Children arrive starving and malnourished. 25% of people in these camps is said to be under the age of 5 years. The Sudanese people find a glimmer of hope when they arrive at the Samaritan’s Purse camps. There are relief supplies, health care and the reminder that God has not forgotten them.
This is not the first time the Sudanese people have had to flee their homes, 20 years ago they were also forced from their homes for much of the same reasons, with many of the same struggles along the way. In the 20 year war there were over 2 million Sudanese lives lost. You can read one man’s story of being a Sudanese refugee for a second time here.
Ken Isaacs Vice President of Programs and Government Relations for Samaritan’s Purse, testified at the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission in June 2013, in Washington, D.C. A couple of the statements he made that broke my heart were, “What we are seeing on the ground is evidence of an orchestrated campaign to terrorize and starve people.” and “Currently, over 71,000 refugees are registered in the Yida refugee camp in Unity State and approximately 117,000 are registered in camps in Meban County, Upper Nile State of South Sudan.” You can read the rest of this report here.

Wells have been dug so that the Sudanese can have clean drinking water.
Samaritan’s Purse has established nine water points throughout the Yida refugee camp, providing clean water for more than 20,000 people per day.
Medical care is being provided and making motherhood safer for Sudanese women.
Nurse Erin Whitehouse examines a child at Yida refugee camp’s Stabilization Center. Many refugees arrive with malnourished children who need immediate care. Mothers throughout the camp know to bring their children to the center if they become ill or need medical attention.
Feeding 5,000 requires a lot of food, miracles and storage.
The food laid out here will only feed 250 families for a month.
Forgiveness is found in the hearts of those hurt by the fighting.

Thank you for sharing about Samaritan’s Purse. I used to prepare boxes with my children when they were growing up each Christmas. Thanks too for the linkup party…a day late 🙂

I so appreciate the work that SP does! I have two friends who work for SP. One is a lady who grew up in Bosnia (the very town where I stayed for 3 months!), and received a shoebox that changed her life. She received Christ, moved to the States and now packs her own shoe boxes and shares her testimony all over the world!
