Teaching Tuesday….Training

Last night I went to bed exhausted, not feeling well and with nothing on the slate to blog about today. God has always provided something for me to write, even when I feel as if I have nothing to say. For this I am very thankful, this tells me I am here for a purpose, beyond just loving to write. God has me here, writing for Him, to reach others with words that often are not mine, but His.

In my morning devotions, I am still following the Good Morning Girls Proverbs 31 study, and today’s verse is where God directed me today.

Proverbs 22:6

“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”

The first word caught my eye today, “train”. I decided to look up the definition to gain more wisdom on what it exactly means.

According to Noah Webster’s 1828 Dictionary “Train” is defined as:

To exercise; to discipline; to teach and form by practice

Immediately I began to picture “training” in action; military, martial arts, ballet, etc. all require lots of teaching and training; taking years to master. This proves that training is neither simple nor immediate, it takes years.

Often I think and sometimes say to myself, why can’t they understand and just do what they’ve been taught. My blessings of 7 and 9 yrs., they’ve been told these things over and over. They have been told…..taught, yet they must be trained. Training continues on, over and over, practicing until they get it right.

A lifetime of teaching and training will reveal itself when our children are old. The time, energy, and loss of sleep will not be in vain. The time spent teaching and training our children is not worthless, we must see it through!

For this is time well spent, teaching and training our children to love and live for the Lord first!

This they will not depart from when they are old!

There seem to be more days when I wonder if my boys are getting it…but I cling to the days when I see evidence that they are. Great post for parents today. 🙂

But some days I just wish they’d get it! You know? But you are right. We don’t train for a marathon and expect to be ready overnight. It takes time, effort, sweat, and lots of consistent discipline on our parts. Thanks for the reminder!
